Personal Notes:

Ross Barker, DO is a Pain Management Specialist with Summit Medical Group Arizona. Dr. Barker is double board-certified and fellowship-trained in anesthesiology and interventional pain management. He completed his anesthesiology residency at Tufts University School of Medicine, St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, in Boston, where he served as chief resident.  He then completed a fellowship in interventional pain medicine at Harvard Medical School, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, in Boston, previously awarded the top pain medicine program in the country.  While at Harvard, he trained among leaders in the field of pain management, utilizing the most advanced techniques and interventions to alleviate acute and chronic pain.

Dr. Barker believes in a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach tailored to each patient’s individual needs, which may include physical therapy, medications, in addition to minimally invasive procedures.  He performs a variety of spinal, peripheral, and joint injections, in addition to radiofrequency ablation, spinal cord stimulation, and kyphoplasty procedures.  Dr. Barker recognizes that each patient has a unique story.  He says, “The most valuable insight into a patient’s condition comes from listening.  Although we often utilize diagnostic testing, such as X-rays and MRI studies to assist with the diagnosis and treatment plan, a patient’s story is typically the most valuable information.”

Dr. Barker appreciates the intricate relationship between medical conditions and how they manifest and interfere with one’s quality of life.  He states, “It is a privilege and honor to be responsible for a patient’s health during some of their most stressful and vulnerable times.  Witnessing improvement first-hand keeps me motivated to continue to do the best I can for my patients.”

Dr. Barker is also a skilled anesthesiologist, having worked in operating rooms and hospital settings throughout Boston, including St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, and Boston Children’s Hospital.  He gained a thorough understanding of virtually every medical condition through safely managing the perioperative care of patients before, during, and after surgery.  His anesthesiology experience gave him a profound appreciation for the interplay between disease processes and the body’s ability to respond in different ways.  Although he enjoyed caring for patients as an anesthesiologist, he wanted to provide continuity of care outside of the hospital setting, which led him to pursue an additional year of fellowship training in interventional pain medicine.

Dr. Barker has always been a very active person and enjoys living a healthy lifestyle.  Having experienced various orthopedic injuries throughout his life, he appreciates how impaired function and chronic pain can impact both emotional and physical well-being.

In his spare time, he, his wife, and their energetic dog enjoy spending time outside, traveling, and exploring new places.
